Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei/The Tatami Galaxy
Jun. 27th, 2013 12:05 amI just watched Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei/The Tatami Galaxy (hereafter shortened to YST), and it was so wonderful that I just have to post about it!
I originally decided to watch it because of this AMV, which really shows the unique art style (and makes perfect use of the themes as well):
Also, the director, Masaaki Yuasa, is going to be at Anime Expo, and I wanted to actually finish something of his properly. I saw most of Kaiba and more-or-less enjoyed it, but I think watching it as it came out and the slow pacing didn't go together well, so I ended up not finishing it.
Anyway, I loved YST! It's funny, intelligent but accessible, different, well-written, and just an incredibly fun series. It's one of those series where, at the end, everything comes together in such a perfect way that I couldn't help but grin like an idiot and point at the screen excitedly at certain points. Honestly, throughout the whole show there are little lightbulb moments that are wonderful. It's just brilliantly written. The art style is so experimental and awesome, too.
I highly recommend it, it's wonderful and well worth watching. It's only eleven episodes, so it's not a hard series to watch, either. The main character does talk really fast, and it might seem a bit confusing at first, but give it just a little bit and you'll start catching on in no time.
