I went to the election party at the Miner's Foundry with my mom,
In the completely packed room with CNN playing on a big screen, Makayla and I started the countdown for the closing of the polls in California and the rest of the West Coast. What we didn't know was that immediately after our enthusiastic countdown that everyone joined in on, a screen flashed saying "Barack Obama has been elected President of the United States."
And the room went insane! My friends and I and the rest of the people in the room (at least two hundred people I'd guess) jumped up and down and screamed and cheered and clapped for what had to be ten minutes straight.
Obama's speech was unbelievably moving, and made even more so with the constant applause, cheers, and happy screaming during every pause in the speech.
Incredible. Totally incredible. I feel so honored that the first presidential election I get to vote in is this one, and--for the first time in over a decade--I feel proud to be American.
Also, HOORAY PROP 2! It passed! Now I have to cross my fingers for Prop 8... So scary. ;___;

Date: 2008-11-06 12:12 am (UTC)So happy for Prop 2, which is going to improve so so so many lives, but I am really disappointed about Prop 8. Still, I have faith that we can change that and that this intolerance will be defeated, and soon.

I feel ya on the point of pride. It's like, damn. We don't have to be embarrassed any more. :)
Even though I don't live in California, I really hope Proposition 8 doesn't pass. I've been paying attention to it for a while.

Date: 2008-11-06 12:16 am (UTC)The whole room I was in went crazy when Ohio went blue as well. Go Ohio! :D
It's really, really nice to not feel ashamed of being American any more. I've never been patriotic, but now I feel a renewed faith in and love for the American people. I mean, obviously not everyone, but a majority of us anyway. :P
Prop 8 did unfortunately pass, but I am sure it will be declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Courts or it will be defeated some other way. Let's keep our fingers crossed and fight for tolerance!

Yeah, I heard about that. D: I hear there's already lawsuits in place challenging it's constitutionality. So, hopefully...

Date: 2008-11-06 02:36 pm (UTC)We can have a proper relationship now, something that Obama has already promised, and not the shame shit as the Bush/Blair era which was so unpopular over here Blair had to step-down 2-3 years earlier than he wanted (the below from BBC):
"And in a telephone address to a gathering of Democrats Abroad in London last spring, he talked about "recalibrating" the special relationship with the UK.
No longer would the UK be regarded as a lackey or lapdog - instead "the United Kingdom will work with America as a full partner"."
We're each other's friendliest ally, and with Obama in power, that relationship can only grow.
