pacificpikachu: (Pikachu -- Star)
Found another potato bug in the house today, making that four that I can remember in recent history. This one was dead, though--probably a victim of Tosca. I fed it to the chickens, who were thrilled to receive such a gift. I'm not sure how these potato bugs are getting inside, haha. At least they don't bother me, as opposed to (utterly harmless but for some reason creepy to me) crane flies.

The peacock who escaped from my peacock rescue a number of months ago has taken to hanging around the chicken coops. I'm going to attempt to capture him. He is looking stunning right now, and was displaying at my fowl.

Spent most of today sleeping and finishing a drawing for [livejournal.com profile] viper_fox. I'm happy with how it turned out!

Tomorrow I want to paint my pumpkin with an Umbreon, and I really have to figure out what I'm writing for NaNo. Either I'm going to think up and slightly plan something original tomorrow before midnight, or fall back on a fanfic I've been wanting to write for ages. I'd prefer not to write fanfiction for NaNo, mostly for social purposes (so I don't have to try and explain fanfiction when asked what I'm writing about at meet-ups), but I would love to write this fanfic if it comes down to that. NaNo aside, I don't know when I'll ever write it otherwise. I have two or three very half-baked original ideas, but I don't know if I can flesh any of them out enough in less than twenty-four hours from now when NaNo starts. I don't trust myself to do a "cold start"--too risky, especially because I have a habit of rambling about nothing forever and then eventually writing myself into nothingness if I'm not sure what direction I'm headed in.

I'm going to go take a shower (yes, at this hour... I'm waiting for my Ebay auctions to end to determine what my max bid will be on something on Y!J) and then read some fanfiction for a little bit.

I doubt this will sway me either way because I'll probably go with whatever I'm feeling at midnight, but I figured I'd see what you guys think! :D

Fanfiction:

Pros:

* Have it mostly planned out, there is clear direction and I already know the ending.
* Know and care about characters even though it's all just existed in my head for a long time.
* Might be one of the few chances to get myself to actually write the damn story.
* Could post it online after proofing and editing. Not that I think many people would read it, but still.
* I love this story and doubt I'd get bored with it.
* Will probably be around 50,000 words.
* I've wanted to write this thing for like a decade.

Cons:

* It's Pokémon fanfiction.
* SUPER awkward summary to try and explain.
* Feel less productive/"cool" if writing fanfiction for NaNo.
* Will make it hard to relate much of the story at any gatherings or to anyone who asks.
* Slight worry I won't be able to do it justice (but this goes for writing it any time I suppose).
* Rather depressing (as is nearly everything I write).

Original:

Pros:
* Much more relatable to other people.
* Feel more productive writing original fiction.
* Have some interesting ideas though they're not fleshed-out.
* Gives me freedom to let the stories go wherever they go.
* Might be publishable, someday (unlikely).

Cons:

* Haven't decided which one I would go with.
* Vague, have no characters planned out, worried story will fizzle out or I'll concentrate on the mundane forever.
* Worried unplanned characters and plot will be boring. (A definite possibility.)
* Rarely finish my original stories.

I think you may be able to tell which one I'm leaning towards.

Made my decision. Going with the fanfic, entitled Dust and Ashes. Ultimately, it's just what I want to write. I already have an investment in the characters (which are original characters, not canon ones, though I usually write/read about the canon characters), I know the gist of the story, and I think it's going to be a blast to write even though the story itself is rather depressing. It's about time I've decided to sit down and actually type this story out, as it's resided in my head for over a decade now. And my other ideas just didn't have enough to work with. I scribbled them out in my notebook and went "That's it?" when I saw that was all I had. I could maybe do a vague idea for a story if I had characters, but having no characters and only a vague idea for a story sounds like a recipe for disaster for me. Perhaps one of those will be next year's NaNo, once it gets more fleshed out.

Maybe once I finish this and edit it, I can post it online. For some reason I don't usually post my original fiction online, probably because I doubt anyone would be interested in it, but fanfiction is different.

I just hope I can do justice to this long-lasting story of mine, which I have a lot of emotional investment in. I'll know I did it well if I'm able to slightly traumatize any readers I may have.

Downloaded the NaNoWriMo trial version of Scrivener, and I'm enjoying filling out character bios in it! Seems like a nice program, I'm excited to play with it this year.

If you're doing NaNoWriMo or write in general, you may want to check it out! It's user-friendly and allows for a lot of outlining, notes, character pictures and information that is easily accessed while writing, and all while still giving you the option of just straight out writing if you prefer.
