[Poll #1791426]

I doubt this will sway me either way because I'll probably go with whatever I'm feeling at midnight, but I figured I'd see what you guys think! :D

Fanfiction:

Pros:

* Have it mostly planned out, there is clear direction and I already know the ending.
* Know and care about characters even though it's all just existed in my head for a long time.
* Might be one of the few chances to get myself to actually write the damn story.
* Could post it online after proofing and editing. Not that I think many people would read it, but still.
* I love this story and doubt I'd get bored with it.
* Will probably be around 50,000 words.
* I've wanted to write this thing for like a decade.

Cons:

* It's Pokémon fanfiction.
* SUPER awkward summary to try and explain.
* Feel less productive/"cool" if writing fanfiction for NaNo.
* Will make it hard to relate much of the story at any gatherings or to anyone who asks.
* Slight worry I won't be able to do it justice (but this goes for writing it any time I suppose).
* Rather depressing (as is nearly everything I write).

Original:

Pros:
* Much more relatable to other people.
* Feel more productive writing original fiction.
* Have some interesting ideas though they're not fleshed-out.
* Gives me freedom to let the stories go wherever they go.
* Might be publishable, someday (unlikely).

Cons:

* Haven't decided which one I would go with.
* Vague, have no characters planned out, worried story will fizzle out or I'll concentrate on the mundane forever.
* Worried unplanned characters and plot will be boring. (A definite possibility.)
* Rarely finish my original stories.

I think you may be able to tell which one I'm leaning towards.

Well, I see it like this- something you force yourself to crank out in a month probably won't be your best work anyways, so might as well have fun and do fanfiction since you seem more interested in it. :) And being interested in your story will help your drive to finish!

Haha, I'm actually hoping this fanfic will turn out good because I've had high expectations for it for a while! I'm not too worried about the quality, though, I can edit it to death afterwards and honestly, my four NaNo novels I've written so far turned out better than I expected. But agreed, if I go with the fanfic, I think it'll be nice to write something I'm so eager to write, as opposed to pushing myself through something I'm less interested in.

The only real part of Nano is the word count.

So why not do both? 8D

Except I never have a problem reaching the wordcount, haha, and then I never finish the stories despite reaching 50k! It's not a bad idea if one fizzles out or something, though, to just switch to another.

If you have everything prepared for the fanfic I would say go with it. :D (I did a fanfic last year and it was easier than going with an original idea.)

Good luck with whichever you choose! ^^

Yeah, I'm leaning towards it because I'm so interested in it and I've wanted to write it for so long. It'll be a great thing to write if I go with it, even if I feel just a tad self-conscious about it.

I'm going to go map out my other ideas and see where I get with them first, but I'm leaning towards the fanfic.

I've read some awesome fanfics that were NaNo pieces.

I say go with the fanfic since it seems that you have it planned out. You need a project that will keep you interested for a month, after all.

That's good to know!

And thanks, I agree--I'm leaning more and more towards the fanfic. :D

It sounds like you have some good reasons to write the fic and you'd have fun writing it, whereas the original story sounds like it could quickly become stressful. I do love your Pokemon fanfiction though, so I'm probably a bit biased. <3

You should do whichever will be more enjoyable for you, and don't worry about what other people think!

Aw, thank you! I'm inclined to agree with having better reasons for writing it, and especially because none of the original stories really pop out at me or have anything developed enough to really work with without taking a big plunge. I'm still going to go write down the original story ideas and see what I get out of them (of course they could be my NaNo prompts next year if they don't work out this year), but I'm leaning towards the fanfic.

This is true, thanks! :D
