Mar. 20th, 2013 01:18 pmAnyway, I got Fire Emblem: Awakening last night and it's awesome! I have it on Normal, which is definitely all I can handle for now, and on Casual because I'm too much of a wimp to handle losing my characters, hahaha. But I'm enjoying it so far. I keep resetting battles for the outcomes I want, but as far as I understand, that's what most people do?
I wanted to recruit Donnell because I heard he gets awesome later on, but I couldn't seem to make it happen from where I saved, no matter what tricks I tried, so I just gave up on that. Maybe next file.
It's a lot of fun so I'm glad I gave it a chance. Thanks to those who urged me to get it! I'm not much of a gamer, so it feels sort of funny to branch out of Pokémon. I'm sure I'll love it even more and more as it goes on. If anyone has tips--like specific characters to recruit/heavily use, or really anything, let me know.
I'm glad I have a distraction from my sadness about losing my chicken. ;; I'm just trying to distract myself until it stops hurting so much to think about it, which might be a while because it's my fault...
Of course, my mom's going to be all annoyed that all I do is play the game, but whatever. Otherwise I'm either just watching TV or on the computer, so basically there's no productive option there. I wish I could bring myself to be more productive, I really do. I'll try to do at least a few things today, though, if I can.

Date: 2013-03-21 04:15 am (UTC)Hahaha I remember the first time I played a Fire Emblem game. I was so mad when I realized that the characters died permanently. I threw the game down and said "I hate this series!" and didn't try it again for several years. XD
Most people reset if a character dies (on classic mode), if they fail to recruit a new character, if a village is burned before they can get to it, etc. Some people reset if they get bad stat growths, but I don't because even I'm not that anal.
Here are some tips on recruiting Donnel for next time. I've had to replay that chapter so many times (between dying and accidentally erasing my save files) that I kind of have the method perfected:
- the easiest way to level Donnel is to make him kill two units (40 exp each) and hit two units without killing them. That should get him up to level 2.
- (optional) before starting the chapter, forge a bronze lance with max power. It costs around 4000 iirc; you should be able to afford it if you've only been buying weapons when your original ones break. The extra damage can mean the difference between Donnel killing or not killing enemies. I always forget to do this until after I recruit him, but it really does help his attack power.
- As for which enemies to kill with Donnel, archers are your best bet because they can't hit back. You know those archers who are standing by the boss? Lure them out one at a time with a unit that doesn't have a long-range weapon, then weaken them until they get down to 3-5 HP, and switch to Donnel to kill them.
- pair Donnel up with one of your cavaliers or paladins. I usually use Frederick, but Sully or Stahl work too if they have high enough defense. (If you use Frederick, be sure to give Frederick a weak lance/sword so Donnel can get in some attacks before Frederick kills everything.) Pairing him with your tactician is also an option if your tactician has a high level, but I prefer pairing him with a mounted unit for the greater movement range, and also because my tactician tends to get criticals on all the enemies (which means no attacking/exp for Donnel).
- make sure Donnel lands on both of the shining ground spaces. There's about a 50/50 chance he'll get experience from one of them.
- (optional) if you have some of the stat boosting items from previous levels--specifically the strength boosting one, though I don't remember what it's called--you can have Donnel use it on the first turn.
As for which characters to use, I wouldn't worry about it on Normal mode; use whoever you want. In some FE games there are units you need to avoid because of their lousy stats, but Awakening is the easiest FE game (especially on Normal/casual mode) so stats don't matter as much. My only advice is to hold off relying heavily on promoted units (for example, Frederick) during the beginning of the game because they don't get as much exp. as non-promoted units and will "steal" all the exp that your non-promoted characters need. It's similar to how exp. works in generation 5 Pokemon games.
PS - Sorry for asking you this again, but I wasn't sure if you saw my question on Tumblr. Are you planning to use the FE: Awakening Club Nintendo code? If not, I'll buy it off of you for whatever the going price is on ebay; I think it's $3-$4 right now.

Date: 2013-03-21 07:55 am (UTC)A big part of this game is that units who reach S-rank supports can bear children. The second generation characters appear after chapter 13, so that goves you some time to see who you want to pair-up. The second generation's statistics are based on their parents, and some couplings have negative modifiers, but you're on Normal mode, so don't worry about that and instead pair-up your characters based on personal preference.
