I think something weird is up with me lately...

Yesterday I got home and was going to study for my lab exam, but I looked at it for five minutes and decided I needed a nap. Tried to take a nap, couldn't due to some of my medical problems, took a shower, and then got all upset explaining to dad about how little motivation or energy I have to devote to Chemistry and how I was going to fail the lab exam, too. Skip forward later, I got home with mom at 9 PM that night, again tried to study, fell asleep within ten minutes and slept until 6 AM then sort of studied for about two hours before class. Except my energy levels were literally so low at this point that even just copying things down felt like a big task and I just wanted to go back to sleep.

I went and did pretty darn badly on the lab exam, came home, and fell asleep again, slept until midnight, and now I'm up but I still feel utterly drained of energy and like I could just go sleep again. Mind you, this is after a full night's sleep plus an additional eight hours of sleep on top of that.

It is that time of month so I have a feeling that could be part of it, but otherwise I'm baffled.

It's strange, and kind of worrisome. I don't feel up for much of anything. I hope it goes away soon.

If I'm a bit scarce online in the next few days, that's why.

Hmm...are you okay? I mean physically....if you feel tired all the time even if you get enough sleep....then you may have mono?? I'm no medical expert but my roommate got it and that's the reason she was drained all the time and was not able to physically get up from her bed....

Either way, I hope this isn't anything serious. And really, who wants to study Chemistry? :p I don't blame you....

I'm feeling a little better now, but still rather lacking in energy. I don't think I'm sick, though. :/ But I will look into it, and if I don't get better in the next day or two I'll definitely make a trip to a doctor.

If you've been sleeping too much and not keeping a regular schedule, that's probably it. Sleeping too much is actually more damaging than sleeping too little, and sleeping at different times each night really affects you too. Human sleep cycles tend to be between 5 and 7 hours. The whole 8 hours a night thing is largely a myth we've created, and people who sleep 8 or more hours each night tend to have more health issues (esp. tied to mental health and heart issues. Loads of articles you can find on Google). Ever woken up bright awake and cheery about 5 or 7 hours after going to sleep, decide to try to go back to sleep as the alarm won't go off for a while yet, and then when it does, you feel awful and not rested? It's because you've entered your second cycle of sleep and would have to sleep for that entire cycle again to feel properly awake.

I know what sleep problems are like and wanting to drop off at any moment. I get about 7 hours a night and as long as I'm busy, I don't feel sleepy at all during the day. But if I am at rest for even five minutes, I can very, very easily fall asleep (regardless of where I am and what way I'm sitting), and think I'm mildly narcoleptic. I've tried sleeping more, but that just made the problem worse (anytime I get over 7 hours sleep, I'm exhausted all day).

They boyfriend also had serious sleep problems when he was working night shifts. Because he was sleeping at different times each day, he was exhausted all the time, but since he's been on regular working hours, as long as he gets 6 hours a night, he feels great all day, has good concentration, and even isn't as hungry.

So what I would do before worrying too much about it is set a proper sleep schedule and try to pin down the amount of hours you feel properly rested after. After a few weeks of that, maybe have a wee talk to the doctor about it. You don't want to go on any medication until you know it's definitely not just a sleep schedule issue as sleeping medication can really screw your body over (the boyfriend's been on different stuff a few times and most times made him worse).

Oh, thank you so much for the in-depth response! I agree that my sleep schedule is completely messed-up, and I think that's the first thing that's going to have to change in my life because it's caused me a lot of grief and affected my life quite badly.

Thank you again--this inspires me to start working on my sleep schedule and getting it back to something better!

I still think there might be something else to it at the moment because I've never felt this drained of energy, but it could be the combination of hormones, weird sleep schedule, and stress over my Chemistry class.

I second [livejournal.com profile] cultnirvana. Alllthough I can't actually function with out 12 to 14 hours of sleep lol (although 3 to 4 is fine too, depending... O.o;;;).

Still, sleeping more than you need will make you more tired. Hormones and stress are probably also a big part of it, yeah.

I hope it clears up soon. D: I used to have a lot of problems with exhaustion, so I know how unpleasant and disrupting it can be. :(

Thank you for the input! I generally seem to need quite a bit of sleep, but I'm starting to wonder if I'm usually sleeping two sleep cycles instead of one... I don't know, I'm going to have to try different lengths of sleep and see what happens.

Yeah, I hope it goes away soon. Being exhausted is definitely not a pleasant thing...

I hope you get to feeling better soon. <3 (Sorry I'm not saying more, I'm really tired.)

I hope you're alright and get more energy soon! Maybe you're coming down with a cold or something? I had no energy and was on the verge of passing out right before the regular symptoms of this current cold hit me. So... maybe it's something like that? I hope not, I hope it's just some quickly passing thing.

In any case, I hope you feel better soon!

I hope this is just a period-related thing and that your energy comes back to you soon dahling. Just something to keep in mind, because I know you haven't been feeling so fabulous lately-- even mild depression can cause this kind of thing with the sleeping too much and still being sleepy and little tasks feeling so heavy. Sometimes it's just impossible to function right when your mind is in a depressed state, cause it really starts to affect you physically.. and that's when prozac becomes very useful |D But this is just me babbling, what the hell do I know? NOTHING REALLY so if you continue to feel this way, take a trip to the doctor's office okai? ♥
