Sep. 15th, 2008 10:05 pmI downloaded this beautiful Moby song that was used in Earthlings because it was so haunting, but now every time I listen to it I get this tight feeling in my chest and stomach. Still, I can't stop listening to it. Gah, I'll never forget that documentary, and even though it's caused me a lot of emotional distress, I want everyone in the world to see it. It affected me more than any other piece of media ever has and I want everyone to understand why the lives of other species are so important.
Here's the link to my entry about it because I know a lot of animal-loving people have added me since then: http://pacificpikachu.livejournal.com/310524.html
I would appreciate it immensely if any of you decide to watch it (especially if you can bring yourself to watch the whole thing), even if you don't consider yourself much of an animal person (or perhaps especially if you don't). It's horrendously painful to watch, but it's also incredibly important to see, I think.
I didn't finish the majority of my homework. :/ I only have a few things that are set-in-stone due tomorrow, thankfully, and I can do one before school tomorrow. I'm pretty much screwed on my Physics assignments, though, unless the teacher decides to take mercy on me. But I can't access stupid WebAssign! D: I can't seem to figure it out! I have five assignments due! D: Argh. Well, I'll talk to him about it tomorrow and see what he says. :( I hate the feeling of not having assignments done, though--it makes me unnecessarily stressed and frustrated.
This is one of those weekends where I simply can't bring myself to do work, though. I don't know what it is. It's like there's a roadblock between me and motivation. I have so much to do and no energy to do it. :(
I DID get HUGE ZUKAN PACKAGE, though. :) I sorted them quite a bit and I'm just leaving it at that for now. I have two other packages in addition to those to send out SOON, so I need to get on that and ship them by Wednesday at the latest. Thankfully everyone's pretty patient with the zukan, so I'll work at whatever pace I can handle without stressing out.
Also, today a little yellow warbler (I think--I need to check my photos again) crashed into my window and was sitting on the deck disoriented with its mouth open. ;A; Of course, it chose the perfect window to crash into, so I picked it up and put it in a box to see if it was just stunned or needed medical assistance. Thankfully it was perfectly fine after an hour or so. I released it after I confirmed there were no injuries and it was able to fly. I took pictures of it before, though! It was really adorable. I'll try and post those if I remember.
I'm really looking forward to my Tahoe trip next weekend with Makayla and possibly Daniell and KK. :D Makayla, Daniell, and I chatted about that and NaNoWriMo on YIM last night for a few hours and it was a lot of fun. The weekend after that is YaoiCon, which should be AMAZING as well (I'll be seeing some of you there!), and then...okay, well, there's a month until NaNoWriMo but I'm totally excited anyway. My story idea so far is really strange and twisted.
Better go to bed--I have to be up early tomorrow for classes. ;__; I wish I had all my homework done! :( That's like 90% my fault, though, don't feel bad for me. XD I've just got to make it through this week! I can do it!

Date: 2008-09-16 07:18 am (UTC)Whoa, do you get birds crashing into your window often? (Wait, that sounds like a stupid question.) I'm glad the warbler is okay!

Date: 2008-09-17 01:20 am (UTC)No, not often! This is the first one in quite some time (at least that I know of). I think it's rather funny that, of all the windows in the world to crash into, the bird chose the window of a wildlife rehabber--and while I was home, at that! One lucky bird.

Date: 2008-09-16 09:45 pm (UTC)Poop. I would kill for a vacation too. :/
Let me know the next time you go and I'll plan on it.
ALSO you better bring me back something AWESOME from Yaoi con. :P

Date: 2008-09-17 01:24 am (UTC)Okay, I'll let you know!
I will! I'll bring you some Hikago smut or something. :P

Date: 2008-09-17 12:55 am (UTC)::ahem:: I'm glad to hear they arrived. :3
I really enjoyed reading about the yellow warbler (or whatever it was), it's nice to hear "it got bonked but then was okay afterwards" now and then. I hope you remember to post some pics!
Now, I have a question for YOU (not zukan-related). I'mma get me some guinea pigs, madam, and I wonder if you have any tips for pig newbies. :D For now I'm still in the planning stages and getting ready to buy all the cage materials. I've found a local guinea pig rescue place, which is awesome, just wondered if you have anything you think I totally absolutely have to know, or anything?

Date: 2008-09-17 01:55 am (UTC)Yes, it was thankfully just stunned, which isn't a big deal at all. I'll post pictures of it tonight after I take a nap probably!
Yayyyy guinea pigs! You'll love them! They're the best!
Okay, here's a few chunks of knowledge:
- Make sure they get actual guinea pig food. A lot of people buy rabbit food because it's cheaper and looks like guinea pig food, but GPs have different nutritional requirements than rabbits and they need the Vitamin C in the guinea pig food or they can get very sick.
- In addition to the guinea pig food, they should be getting timothy hay every day to keep their digestive tract working. Other things that are good for snacks are (and I ganked this from a guinea pig website): apples, bananas, bread (slightly stale & crunchy, but not moldy), broccoli, carrot greens, carrots and baby carrots, celery (cut into small pieces first), cilantro, cucumber, dandelion greens, grass, green & red bell peppers, green leaf & romaine lettuce, kale, kiwi, mustard greens, oats, oranges, parsley, raspberries, spinach, tomatoes. They should also be getting about 10 mg of vitamin C daily--the pellets supposedly contain this, but most GP owners say not to trust this.
- Don't give them long celery stalks, iceberg lettuce, shelled nuts or seeds, raw beans, potatos with any green on them, and rhubarb. These are all bad for them.
- Make sure to give them a pretty big cage so they can roam around comfortably. My two are in a cage that's about 3 feet long by 2 feet long or so, and that seems to be comfortable for them. If you can, have an outdoor exercise pen for them where they can eat fresh grass. Make sure it's predator-proof. I use a cage that's entirely enclosed with wire but doesn't have a sold bottom. It has the wire on the bottom and top as well, so that way the GPs can eat the grass through the wire but if something were to knock the cage over or turn it around they'd have no way to get at them. It's just good for them to get outside when they can and get some exercise and vitamin D. If that's not possible, I think you can find other sources of Vitamin D and just let them roam in safe areas of the house. :)
- Good page about bedding: http://www.guineapigcages.com/bedding.htm/. I tend to use shavings over newspaper.
- Guinea pigs are wonderful and really really sweet. :) Good luck! Let me know if you have any questions! Also, please excuse anything in this that doesn't make sense--I'm exhausted at the moment.

Date: 2008-09-17 02:08 am (UTC)The space I have for their enclosure is a folding table top, it's about 72x30 inches, and I'm gonna build a C&C cage of 2x4 cubes, where each cube is like 14 inches, so... that sounds good!
I won't be able to get them outside because we're on the third floor (I feel like I'm depriving them a bit) but I plan on letting them have good floor time and see where else to get the vitamnin from.
As for the zukan, well, it kinda sucks about Marshtomp (wonder where he got to o_O naughty seller!) though I never did like that evo stage anyway so honestly I'm not that broken up. Maybe I'll find a random one someday to complete it. I can't wait for them all to get here! (I'm not trying to rush you, I'm just all gleeful because they've touched down, hehehe)

Date: 2008-09-17 04:39 am (UTC)That sounds like a great set up! :)
Nah, don't feel bad! Guinea pigs do fine in houses as long as they get regular exercise. And I'm sure there are simple solutions to the vitamin D thing--a Google search should help you out with that. If all else fails, ask around on a guinea pig forum. From what I've seen, the people on guinea pig forums seem to be friendly and helpful, so that might be a good resource!
Yes, it is too bad about Marshtomp. :( Come to think of it, though, I don't think there was a Marshtomp in the original pictures to begin with. He must've gone off to some swamp somewhere. XD; Hopefully you'll find one someday!
I'll keep you updated on shipping! Your zukan package is big and heavy for zukan, haha.

Date: 2008-09-17 01:10 am (UTC)I think I've seen that documentary in my IB Bio II class last year, or at least parts of it. It really was good.
Ugh, I know how you feel. I keep skipping my very boring morning class.
Have fun in Tahoe!

Date: 2008-09-17 01:56 am (UTC)It's an amazing documentary. I hope more people will see it and realize the importance of it.
I wish I could skip classes. D: I'm a science major and hoping to get into vet school, so skipping out on anything in a science class is a bad, bad idea.
Thanks! I definitely definitely will. :D

Date: 2008-09-17 02:06 am (UTC)Ugh, yeah. I'm a film major and the one I've been cutting is not related to my major at all, and it's a lecture class that doesn't take attendance, so missing it here and there doesn't matter. :D.

Date: 2008-09-17 04:41 am (UTC)Yeah, I don't see a problem with cutting classes as long as you're keeping up. And oooh, a film major? That's completely awesome.

Date: 2008-09-17 04:34 am (UTC)Yes, I agree. Thankfully my teacher was understanding so it should be fine I think.
I will! I actually already have a ton of Tahoe pictures on my computer--my mom's side of the family owns a nice townhouse up there so we've been going up there since I was born pretty much. We're only about two hours away as well (well, one hour away from Lake Tahoe but two hours away from South Shore where our townhouse is) so it's not a big endeavor to go up there when we feel like it. It's really gorgeous there. ♥
Thank you! I think it'll be okay; it's just hard when my motivation level is so low. .__.
