Nov. 18th, 2007 08:38 pmWithout fail, every semester, once we reach about mid-November, my motivation to do homework or put any effort whatsoever into my classes begins to suffer pretty badly. I mean, I still get almost straight As, but, you know, it just gets so hard to pick up that pencil and do that work.
I have discovered a semi-cure to my lack of homework motivation, though, and that is doing my homework with VERY LOUD, VERY UPBEAT music playing. That way, the happiness of listening to loud and happy music counteracts the doom and gloom of writing electron configurations. Today I listened to The Pillows, ZZ, Italian Pokémon themes, and E Nomine at excellent volumes, and you know what? It made doing Chemistry for about five or six hours pretty tolerable. It helped that The Pillows and ZZ have an additional effect of giving me fuzzy memories, as I've seen both bands live, and those two concerts were SO FUN and SO MEMORABLE that even the slightest memory from either concert makes me grin.
Now, however, I must NaNo (34-35 K, here I come!), and that doesn't go very well with loud music. Some Yoko Kanno (usually the Honey & Clover live action OST or Turn-A Gundam or Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex) does the trick, however. I still want to make a soundtrack for my novel. ♥ I'll probably do that once November's over. I started Magpie's character design, but something about the balance of his anatomy was off and I wasn't in that much of a drawing mood, so I abandoned the picture to work on later.
What do you guys listen to when doing activities like chores, homework, writing/drawing, etc.?

Date: 2007-11-19 05:58 am (UTC)Except, however, when it's artwork, then I need music. It really depends on what kind of artwork I want to draw... cutesy pop/fashion sort of stuff gets capsule, dark and futuristic stuff gets Amon Tobin, etc. Most of my music is anime-related, though. I tend to get into obsessive patterns with the music I listen to at home so I get routinely tired of listening to a certain bunch of songs in cycles.
Actually I can't get how people listen to music and concentrate on homework, I have enough musicworms in my brains to irritate me when I'm trying to do something ;(

Date: 2007-11-19 06:03 am (UTC)I get into obsessive patterns with music, too--I definitely feel you there. And I'll probably look up those two artists, as we have such similar music tastes, it seems. The majority of my music is anime music, too. Anime music is addictive. ♥

Date: 2007-11-19 06:10 am (UTC)Ah, but I listen to just about everything, so you never know. :3 Seriously, I listen to everything from apocalyptic sounding German techno to annoyingly high-pitched J-pop to opera to classical to jazz to [insert everything Yoko Kanno does] to... Virtually everything except country and rap. Even then, there are definitely exceptions.

Date: 2007-11-19 06:15 am (UTC)When I'm working, I usually just let iTunes play whatever. If I don't like the stuff I'm working on, I listen to something really loud, angry, and upbeat. If I'm writing a paper, I usually have Yoko Kanno instrumentals on. When I'm working on an art project (and sometimes when I'm doing freelance stuffs), I'll throw some anime on. It's usually stuff I've seen a lot so I don't have to pay much attention to it but can still enjoy it. I work downstairs in the same room as our TV, so it's pretty convenient.
When I'm feeling reeeaaallllly unmotivated, I give myself treats for completing a certain amount of work. Usually I'll let myself read a chapter or two of many after I finish a page of work or something. =D
...and sometimes, if the work is really mindless, I think up stories as I work.

Date: 2007-11-19 06:24 am (UTC)Loud and upbeat is definitely my strategy for stuff I'm loathe to doing. XD And hooray for Yoko Kanno! Yoko Kanno is good for everything.
One of these days, I'm going to have her write a soundtrack for my life.I've tried watching anime while working on things, but I've found that to be hopeless. Even if I've seen something multiple times, I still get all obsessed over every single detail of the animation and voice acting and little nuances of the plot. I've actually pondered buying some mindless but pretty anime just to throw in the background while doing stuff, but so far all my "mindless but pretty" anime has turned out to have a mind after all. Woe. I'll have to find something like this at some point.
If I'm working on mindless stuff, I plot for my NaNo novel. >D

However, there ARE certain songs that when I'm running, they relax me in a strange way. I don't slow down (because I'm on a treadmill), but some of the stress does leave my system. Generally up beat is the way to go though. Maybe I'll procrastinate on sleeping a little more and make a running only mix. Meh.
