I just reached 15K!
I'm amazed at how well this is going. :D I have trouble with and tend to get discouraged at transitions between events, but once I reach the events themselves, it's extremely easy to get another 1-2K down in less than an hour. I'd love to reach 20K by tomorrow evening, but we'll see if I'm able to. At the very least, I'm trying to do 2K a day, so that means I need to get to 16K before midnight. :) Should be a piece of cake, even with Abnormal PsychologyAPPROPRIATELY ENOUGH slightly going into my writing time for the night. I've been writing pretty consistently from 9PM-ish to midnight or whenever I reach my intended word count (I get distracted by the forums a little during my writing time), which works well for me. For those of you who are behind, I highly recommend scheduling a specific time for just writing, and be sure to make it at least two or three hours, minimum.
I got a little stuck about what my characters were going to do, so thusfar today they've gone to breakfast at a chicken hoarder's house. And the chicken hoarder believes he was a chicken in his past life. Yes, it's exactly as strange as it sounds. But I like the chicken hoarder! He's kind of strangely charming. It works surprisingly well in the story, too. XD I seem to be alternating between these very unreal, strange events, people, and settings, and pretty normal realism, which is fun. Because one minute the characters will be just wandering around the city, and the next they'll be in some possible but very eccentric setting or in an odd situation. I'm amazed Magpie has stayed reasonably level-headed throughout all of this, though he never did turn into the cynic I thought he was going to.
Other NaNo-ers, are you all at what your NaNoWriMo site profiles say, or are you ahead of that? I'm noticing a lot of you have fallen a bit behind, and I'm hoping you'll be able to catch up soon. D: Also, how in general is NaNoWriMo going, everyone? What sort of writing schedule have you got going? Any unexpected character or plot developments? Anything else interesting you want to share? I don't care if your comments are long, I'm really curious and would love to hear what you have to say about your NaNo experiences so far. :D

Date: 2007-11-08 09:09 pm (UTC)I usually write after dinner, I get in a little WoW first, watch some TV. I also write with the TV on, which isn't ideal for most but it works for me. It's usually the food network or animal planet or something.
I got a surprise character background detail last night. "Orin hates euthanizing animals because he did it to a person, once." Kind of came out of left field but there you are. I don't have the exact details, I just know it was a girl, and his tide-partner at the time was not agreeing to it. Also finally nailed down the reason he's alone (he's a... well, he's got a power that takes two to use, it's the tide thing). Plus, Jase apparently has a fondness for bats. (in my story, birds and bats have switched roles. Just making some not-our-world flavour, but I like it) So yay. But I really need to figure out how to get the plot, or it's gonna end up a romance. I fear it might anyway! Ah well.
My favourite part of this is trucking along with my plan in the background and then just veering straight off. Since a plan doesn't have details, sometimes the details that you have to include when you're actually writing prove that your plan doesn't work, so you have to fix it as you go.
I'm actually getting annoyed that there's only 50k words. I'm not afraid of not writing that much in 30 days, I'm afraid of not being able to finish my story in that few words.

Date: 2007-11-08 10:47 pm (UTC)That's interesting that you write in front of the TV. I wonder what would happen if I did that...? Probably would depend on how interested I was in the program. XD I generally write in bed, actually, with Yoko Kanno music blasting nice and loud.
!!! That's a great sudden plot twist! I approve highly of it. Really interesting. I hope that plot works out. :D
And, hey, there's nothing stopping you from making it longer! If it feels like it should be longer to you, go for it! Aim for the 50K for the month, and then just keep going after the month ends.
