I'm not going to write the whole day down blow-by-blow because, truth be told, I'm exhausted. It definitely wasn't the best day, and it was very stressful.

I woke up at the usual hour (7 AM-ish) to feed the birds, and once I had completely woken up I spent quite a while packing the birds up for their journeys to the birdsitters (AKA: flight cage and Jacqui). This involved stuffing some birds, such as the blackbirds and Mock-Mock, into carriers that are too small for them to be happy. Oh well.

I was happy because the little grosbeak had finally fully recovered.

Well, we took Mock-Mock to the flight cage, let him out, he freaked out for a little while but calmed down soon, and headed back up to Cindy's driveway. Mom needed to go do chores, so I went with Jacqui. Hence, we transferred the various bird carriers to Jacqui's car. As I was doing this, we noticed Cindy's dog had just about crawled into the car and was staring the birds in the carriers intently (she had been chasing the cassin's finch around the flight cage from the outside earlier, stressing the bird out). We gently reprimanded her and shut the door closest to the birds. I went to put some mealworms in the fridge on Cindy's deck, and when I came back I was frustrated to find that the dog had crawled in the front door and was, again, staring at the birds intently.

Or so I thought.

When I went to check on the birds and chased the dog out of the car, initially I thought they were okay. The grosbeak was screaming (which he had never done), but at first I thought it was just because of the stress. Well, when I picked him up, it turned out the dog had bitten him, leaving a pretty big puncture wound in his side and breaking his leg in the process. T_T I was really upset about this--the baby was still crying, he was bleeding all over, and his leg was limp. I thought he was going to die.

We got him to Janey's house because Janey has lots of medical supplies, she's really close to Cindy's house, and we were planning on going there anyway, and managed to stop the bleeding eventually with styptic powder. I also put some Silvadine on the wound, disinfected it, got him antibiotics, cleaned him up, etc. After I did all of that, I could do little for the grosbeak other than hold him and feed him whenever he wanted it, so that's exactly what I did while I watched Jacqui, Janey, and...Sally, I think her name is (?) looking at the woodpeckers (Janey has four baby possibly Piliated Woodpeckers, which might be a big deal because they're extremely rare in the rehab world, and a juvenile sapsucker) and checking out a fledgling mourning dove who supposedly had a wing injury but was actually perfectly healthy.

Meanwhile, we decided Sally (or whatever her name is...I'm terrible with names ^^;;) was going to birdsit my four finches, so with the hand that wasn't holding the grosbeak, I wrote her some instructions on their care, said goodbye to them, and headed off to Jacqui's.

In the car on the way home, the wren escaped his cage twice and ended up hopping all over the car. He was difficult to capture, but we managed eventually. It did amuse me a lot when he landed on the gas pedal (we were stopped at the time, so you know) and proceeded to wipe his beak on it, though. I'm going to miss that wren for the week I don't see him--he's a riot. XD;;

At Jacqui's, I let my blackbirds in her flight cage, causing them immense happiness, and then went into the considerably more dire activity of setting the grosbeak's leg with a toothpick and some medical tape. ;_; It was a bit difficult, because the break is near his leg joint, and it made me cringe whenever I saw the leg bend at the break because it obviously hurt him so much (he'd always start crying when this happened ;_;), but eventually I managed to set so it at least was more stable than it would have been if he had been left to his own devices.

Mom picked me up later, though she was a little mad at me because it all took so long and she needed to go sleep for work. Earlier, she had picked up this completely awesome three-in-one cage from Jacqui's, though, so that was cool. I think I'm going to use it for my cages at Dad's, once I can clear some space for it in my room.

At Mom's, I spent hours cleaning animal cages and doing chores, and by the time I was done I was completely, utterly, and totally exhausted. It hadn't helped that I had cramps all day, felt extremely weak, didn't eat anything, didn't shower, and was under a lot of stress. I even fell asleep on the car ride to the hospital, where we met Dad (he was late, though).

Then I watched an episode of Law and Order: SVU (a sicker one than usual, too) and Monk. Both were quite wonderful. And now here I am. I left out a lot of the day, but I really, reeeally don't have the energy to wtite about any more.

Exhausting day. Absolutely exhausting, emotionally and physically. The good news is it looks like the grosbeak is going to be okay, though I was really feeling awful he had to go through all of that horrible stuff right after he recovered from his cat scratch fever. This poor little one has had quite the life so far. The other good news is that I now have a week off to relax in Tahoe, hang out with my cousins, draw, go whitewater rafting, and other fun stuff.

Well, I'm hoping to post again tomorrow, but if I don't, you won't hear from me for a week.

Anyway, I need to go get some rest, pack a little, and maybe take a shower.

GAH. Need rest. Need relaxation. NEED VACATION. It's a very good thing I'm getting one.

I think he is now, but it actually turned out both of his legs were broken. Now that I'm back, I can actually go check on him instead of just getting phone updates.

I'll do my best to post some art at some point soon... I haven't scanned anything in a long while. @_@ I actually didn't end up with any time to draw while on vacation, but I hope to soon. Those new markers I got are caaaaalling my name. :)
