The wildlife are taking over!
Jul. 10th, 2005 11:29 pmI have to get back to my Health homework (erk...), so this is going to be short.
The wild animals are everywhere!
Last night at about midnight, I was watching Gungrave when I heard Lily start barking down by the chicken coop. I tried to call her back up to the house, but she continued barking and growling so I went down to the chicken coop with a lantern to investigate. I thought the chickens would be safe because Rusty modified the coop so (we thought) skunks couldn't get in the inside part like before, but it turns out it figured out another way to get in. Lily was growling at the door, where our three roosters that can't be in the coop were sleeping. I opened the door, and...there was another darn skunk!
It wasn't the same one as last time because this one was much smaller. It looked at me fearfully, sprayed, and everything began to reek so I backed off from the door quickly. As I was standing about five feet from the coop, the skunk pushed out of the door and ran off into the darkness. Lily followed it shortly after, and I made some loud growling noises to hopefully scare it off.
Well, long story short Lily got sprayed right in the face, so her eyes and nose were somewhat irritated for a little while. I took her up to the house when I was sure the poor roosters were okay (they were sleeping literally a foot from where the skunk was--though they're about twice this skunk's size), and took the hose and washed off her face. Mom wasn't home at the time.
We gave her a bath with Simple Green today, so she doesn't really smell any more, but the whole property sort of reeks of skunk.
Mom heard a bobcat yowling last night, not far from the property.
I saw a HUGE red-tailed hawk on our property today.
I've seen about a thousand jackrabbits and quail (but I always see quail and I see a lot of jackrabbits, so that's not a big deal really).
Mom apparently spotted *another* fox when she was out driving during the time that Lily was sprayed, making two in the course of 48 hours.
We found what appeared to be a mouse nest under Mom's saddle today (in the tack room). There were no mice to be seen, though. I can't decide if this is a good thing or a bad thing, because I was kind of hoping to find some mice. XD
There have been lots of vultures very close to the road lately. (Roadkill from all the animals that have been out lately?)
I've even seen more deer than usual. Where did all these animals come from? O_o;; I know we have a lot of wildlife around, but we don't *see* them that often.
Today I did nothing, so I shall spare you the details of the nothingness. That was all I wanted to say anyway.
