Oct. 17th, 2011 03:31 pmFinally managed to get the two hens out of the shelter! One appears to be a light brown leghorn, the other is perhaps a game-type hen? I'm not sure on the second one, she's likely a mixed breed, but she is buff in color. The first hen appears to be healthy and well, the second clearly had a lot of trauma. She is missing all of the feathers on her underside, and covered in tons of sores (mostly scabbed over now) and at least one large bruise. I'm not sure what would have happened to her to cause all these injuries, but I'm glad she's with me now so she can heal the rest of the way and be healthy and happy. I feel bad for these hens for having to be in the shelter for so long. Now they're in the former quail pen, where they'll stay for at least a few days as quarantine. When I put them in there, they immediately started clucking happily and eating the sprouting grass.
I also went by the Sutter county animal control, and there were so many great animals in both shelters. ;____; I have my eye on several of the dogs as potential fosters, I'll ask my mom what she thinks. In particular, at Sutter there was a gorgeous eight-year-old sheltie who was just turned in by his owner today. My first dog was a sheltie and my mom had shelties for years and years, so I think we may talk about fostering him. I also fell for a young border collie/cattle dog mix who was a total sweetheart, a pomeranian/mini american eskimo, and a number of others. Really, I just wanted to take all of them home, though. There are SO many wonderful animals in shelters, I don't think people realize!
