Whoa there!
May. 17th, 2005 10:08 pmI just met the killer of Quon, Lavie, and Claus face-to-face (and with my nose, too -_-). O_O
Lily and I went down to the chicken coop in the rain just now, just to check on the flock, and Lily raised her hackles and started growling at the door to the indoor part of the coop. I immediately knew we had found the killer, and I was little crazed about it. I had no plan, but I threw open the door with a yell and there...was a clump of black and white fur with frightened eyes.
It took a second for it to register with me that it was a skunk, and a freaked-out, puffed-up one at that. He was maybe three feet away from me, if not closer, and Lily was right in his face. For a minute my instincts were telling me [illogically] to capture him or something (yeah, right. With what?), but soon I was looking at his big tail up in the air and it registered. Duh, it was a skunk. Three feet away. And I had him cornered. RUN!
So Lily and I tore off towards the house just before he stank up the whole area, and I was yelling "MOM, MOM, I FOUND THE SKUNK!" except she didn't hear me at first, so I had to go up to the house to get her to understand.
Ryan, Mom, and Tia accompanied Lily and I back down there, where the door was wide open and the skunk had fled. We reinforced the door with rocks and sticks so he hopefully can't get in again, and checked all other openings to the coop. Ryan was scared that the skunk was going to leap out of the darkness and attack him (as usual), and kept taking the lantern, making my anti-skunk measures rather difficult.
Darn, I only wish I had found him before last night... And to think this all could have been prevented. ;_;
We're thinking we might try to trap the skunk with a feral cat trap (using eggs as bait, because before we got the doves all he ate were the eggs (he never touches the chickens, thank Ho-oh)) and relocate him. I wouldn't have the heart to kill him, even though he did kill my beloved pets. ;_;
It was actually kind of thrilling to find him, though, and be face-to-face with him. At least now I know what he is and how he gets in the coop, so I can commence prevention measures. o_o
Heh, just thought I'd share that with you. I hope Lily doesn't smell like skunk...I think we got away just in the nick of time.
