Apr. 24th, 2010 12:34 pmUpdate on peepers:
- All nineteen chicks that are going to hatch are out. :) I was making the right decision helping the five that I did, as they were healthy but simply got stuck on the membrane, which dried out. They look a little funny because of the dried membrane that got stuck on them, but otherwise they're doing fine! One does have a problem with its leg. I'm hoping it'll get stronger and the problem will go away or there is some way to treat the problem, but even if it doesn't go away, it can go in with my "socially awkward" group with The Salula and Minky. It gets around all right. I haven't lost any chicks, yayyy. :D
- I did, however, make a bad decision last night to help the duckling out of its egg. *Facepalm* If I had left it alone, it would have hatched on its own time and been fine, but as it is it's a bit premature. The membrane still had some blood flow when I was opening the egg, so there was some blood when I was opening it, and the duckling hasn't completely reabsorbed its yolk yet. Almost, but not quite. I've definitely learned why people are so strict about not helping eggs, and I'm constantly learning new things. I was freaking out about it last night, but the duckling made it through the night and is quite perky, and I'm cautiously optimistic about its survival chances. It imprinted on me, so every time I go over to the incubator, it looks up at me. ;A; It's Tux's baby--it has the tuxedo markings. I will post pictures of it and all the other chicks soon, but I'm reluctant to post pictures of the duckling for a few days until I'm more sure it's going to make it. I think it will, but...just in case.
Hatching eggs is much more complex than one would expect it to be! Especially morally and when it comes to making decisions to intervene or not intervene. @___@
EDIT: The duckling is doing better and better. I'm feeling good about its chances. :D
