I hate rehab accidents so much. ;___;

I got in a cute little black-capped chickadee fledgling last night. There was something off about it--potentially spine damage near the tail--but by all means it was alert and hopping around and doing pretty well, really. Our group doesn't get chickadees too often and they're downright adorable, so I was a little excited. I'd say it had at least a 70% chance of making it. I covered up the box it was in with a towel like I normally do for birds the first night or so until they settle in and I can move them into something more permanent.

I heard cheeping this morning and figured, oh, the chickadee is just chirping because it's morning and it's most likely hungry. I was really exhausted and sleeping so it didn't occur to me that it was strange just how frequently it was chirping. When I woke up, I found Honey playing with the poor bird, who had somehow escaped the box with the towel over it (which I have never had happen before) and starting hopping about on the floor, and seconds after I grabbed it away from her it passed away.

I know it was just an accident and I had no way of expecting it was going to escape like that because no bird has ever escaped that arrangement in the hundreds of birds I've had, nor end up in Honey's jaws because she's been extremely tired and groggy since her spay yesterday, but I can't help but feel completely awful about it. I don't know why I'm so accident-prone with rehabbing, especially because they're always just weird freak accidents.

I'm sorry, little chickadee. I'm so sorry that I couldn't save you.

It was just an accident, but it's impossible for me not to regret it and feel terrible about it and completely blame myself. :(

On a lighter note, my autobiography job is awesome and actually ended up rather coincidental. I'll write about it later.

Ughhh, until I can get a real schedule figured out I keep overscheduling myself. ;; It's really difficult to balance rehabbing with all these odd jobs (even just balancing the odd jobs by themselves is difficult), so I'm probably going to have to cut back on rehabbing the next month and be careful with scheduling to make sure not to double-book my time or burn myself out completely. I'm going down to Sacramento in about an hour and returning this evening and possibly taking two border collie mixes to watch for a few days then, but I don't know yet if I'll be able to do that.

Basically, things are CRAZY at the moment. XD But I expected as much, and things will work out.
