Kaiba, Macross Zero, and so on. :)
Jun. 15th, 2008 02:44 amFINALLY started Kaiba today! I was going to catch up on Kure-nai and Toshokan Sensou, but I didn't really feel like watching either of them... So Kaiba it was!
Like several f-list people were saying, it's a bit hard to get used to at first. It's so different from anything I've ever seen; in concept, art style, and just general atmosphere. It kind of gave me an icky feeling at first, for lack of a better way to say it, but I gladly kept going because I've heard great things about it and I could see it had potential. Once I got past the first two episodes, it started shaping up and getting really interesting. I only watched the first four episodes because Nicole called me right as I was about to start the fifth, but it gets sort of...entrancing, I guess, after a little while and its uniqueness grows on you. It's gotten quite enjoyable and even gave me shivers on a few occasions. I'm looking forward to getting up to episode seven tomorrow if I have time. :) I'd definitely recommend this series to open-minded anime fans. If you need bishounen, typical art styles, or familiar storylines/settings, though, this will make you way too uncomfortable. It's a fascinating ride for those who are patient and open-minded enough for it, though.
I also watched all of Macross Zero! Nicole came over and she wanted to watch Macross Frontier episode ten (which I watched twice today for no real reason. The fangirly factor of it kind of wore off by the third viewing. ;__;), and after that we decided we needed to watch Macross Zero. So, we did!
I've heard whispers of some anime fans having some sort of bias against/dislike towards this OVA (I don't know if this is true or not?), but I personally enjoyed it a LOT and had only a few minor complaints with it at all. I thought it was excellent! I would watch this over most movies any day. In my opinion, it was remarkably epic and complex for being only five episodes long. I swear it felt like it was thirteen episodes, if not twenty-six, and I mean that in a good way. :) It packed a lot of storyline and some good character stuff in that small amount of time. Despite the CG being a bit too conspicuous (certainly a huge improvement over Arjuna's CG, however), the art of it was absolutely gorgeous. The skies are so stunning all the way through and the use of color is incredible if you pay attention to it. The colors would change drastically depending on the mood of the scene, what was going on, and even seemed to highlight themes and ideas in a few scenes. I also really liked the character designs, which I thought struck a great balance between anime and realism. Overall, if this series was released this year, I STILL would think it's really impressive art/animation-wise, even if the CG doesn't blend as well as it does in Macross Frontier. It was just...such eye candy all the way through!
There were a few parts of the story I had trouble understanding fully, most likely because I'm new to the whole Macross thing, but most of that was pretty minor. There were some interesting philosophical and anthropological ideas sprinkled throughout. A little of the nature stuff was still pushing on cheesy on occasion, but Kawamori has a tendency to be a bit too obvious with his message in that regard. (I think Arjuna was proof enough of this.)
There were some other little random things I absolutely LOVED about it and little random things I could nitpick about, but suffice to say I thought it was excellent and a worthwhile way to spent two and a half hours. Nicole enjoyed it a lot, too. I recommend it to just about everyone. :D
I baked my Umbreon sculpture and Ryan's Bonsly sculpture today in the oven, and we'll be painting them tomorrow once we go out and get some paints. :D I'll be sure to post the results!
Other than that, um...here's a meme from
geruempel, who is new to my f-list. :)
You know how sometimes people on your friend's list post about stuff going on in their life, and all of a sudden you think "Wait a minute? Since when are they working THERE? Since when are they dating HIM/HER? since when?" And then you wonder how you could have missed all that seemingly pretty standard information, but somehow you feel too ashamed to ask for clarification because it seems like info you *should* already know? It happens to all of us sometimes.
Please copy mine below, erase my answers putting yours in their place then post it in your journal! Please elaborate on the questions that would benefit from elaboration! One-Word-Answers seldom help anyone out :)
1. First Name: Kristin.
2. Age: Twenty.
3. Location: I have two different houses because of divorced parents. One house is in Nevada City and the other is in Penn Valley, which are about ten or fifteen minutes apart. Nevada County (where both of the towns and hence both of the houses are located) is in Northern California basically between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe, and about an hour drive from each. It's in the foothills, so we get a bit of snow in the winter, but it's hot during the summer. Nevada City is a little old-fashioned touristy gold-mining town, and Penn Valley is an even tinier agricultural town.
4. Occupation: I'm an in-home wildlife rehabilitator, which is 100% unpaid but very morally rewarding. I also sell Pokémon stuff online, so I suppose you could consider that a mini online business. I tend to spend about as much money on Pokémon stuff as I make so it doesn't end up being too profitable, but it's fun and helps me get things I want for my collection. :)
5. Partner: None, and not really looking for anyone, either. I'm pretty happy by myself, though I guess it would be nice to have someone to be around a bunch and be affectionate towards. The way I figure, if I'm going to find the right person, I'm going to magically run into them someday, and if I don't...whatever. :) That's fine with me!
6. Kids: My rehab birds! In all seriousness, though, I'm deeply afraid of/grossed out by babies/pregnancy/childbirth, and I am completely sure I'll never have kids. Not only because I'm squicked by it, but I'm also very, very morally opposed to bringing more humans into the world for a variety of reasons.
7. Brothers/Sisters: One seventeen-year-old brother named Ryan. He and I get along really well about half of the time and don't get along the other half. He's immature for his age, though he's getting a little better with time.
8. Pets: Two dogs (a border collie and a lab mix), two cats, two cockatiels, a lovebird, a parrotlet, a horse, three guinea pigs, twenty-seven chickens, two ducks, a pheasant, six fish, and a shrimp.
9. List the 3-5 biggest things going on in your life: Preparing for Anime Expo, watching as much anime as possible before the summer ends, rehabbing birds.
10. Parents: They're divorced and are complete opposites in a lot of ways. My dad is a neat freak who is obsessed with rock and roll posters/rock music in general. He and I like to bond by watching Law & Order, The Office, and true crime shows together. We only have the parrotlet, Zephyr, and the fish/shrimp at his house. My mom is obsessed with animals--especially horses. She spends a lot of her time with her horse, River Nights, and she's generally pretty disorganized. She lets me have a ton of pets, though, and cares for them when I'm at my dad's house. She also came along to anime conventions with me for five years before she's finally decided she doesn't have the time or money to be going to conventions all the time any more.
11. Who are some of your closest friends: I have a lot of close friends, so naming them all would be a very bad idea. If you're ever curious who I'm talking about in an entry, though, feel free to ask and I'll tell you who they are. XD
If any of you ever have questions about me, go on ahead and ask! It's fine if they're personal (well, to a reasonable degree), fandom-related, or...whatever you want to ask. :B I like talking about myself, hahaha. At least I admit it, though.
Bahhh, it's almost 3 AM. I guess I should go to bed. But only very reluctantly. :/
