Ahh, I'm tired from the last couple of days! They were a lot of fun, though. :D

First I went to my grandma's 90th birthday party, which was nice! I did a drawing of a bear cub and a teddy bear for her, because she loves and collects teddy bears. She adored it! It was nice talking to my extended family, we did a lot of laughing and had some good conversations.

Then, I drove down to San Francisco and stayed at my aunt's house about twenty minutes from SF. I didn't bring my computer with me, so I spent the evening drawing a unicorn for Peter S. Beagle. I was struck with horrible art block and couldn't figure out exactly what I wanted to do, so the drawing wasn't as grand as I would have liked, but it turned out all right. I wrote him a letter on the back, too.

I talked to my aunt for a while in the morning, which was also enjoyable and helpful. We've both had some struggles to overcome and she had some good insight/advice. She and my uncle are retiring to a nice area near the sea later this year (they're 55), partly because they didn't have kids. :D We also talked about Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart, who we both watch.

Then I left for the Castro, and drove up and down the street for a while, looking for parking. I found parking pretty close to the theatre, but the parking meter wouldn't let me put in more than two hours at a time, so I had to run out during the movie to refill it. Oh well.

The Castro Theatre is just beautiful! And the screening was wonderful. Seeing as The Last Unicorn came out six years before I was even born, of course I had never seen it on the big screen. It was all remastered and it looked beautiful! I'm not as big of a fan of the movie as I am the book (because I think the book is flawless), but I will never get over how beautiful the movie's design and animation of the unicorn is. Anyway, there are aspects of the movie that I adore and aspects I don't like so much, but I appreciated it a great deal in its theatrical glory. There were some nice extras at the screening, like a Q&A with Peter, a raffle, selling goods upstairs, and cosplayers and whatnot. It was cool to be around so many people who adore this book/movie so much, though I didn't talk to anyone in any sort of depth.

I left at around 3 PM and headed to Japantown, which was insanely crowded because the Cherry Blossom Festival is going on. I decided to go walk around anyway, and waited a while to park. It was fun wandering around, though it was very crowded and there were lines for everything. I'm still glad I got to go! I got a crepe, and some mochi, and two cute corgi calendars for only $2 each. I also bought a Pokémon book that looked interesting in hopes that it would be good for scanning, but it wasn't as interesting as I hoped it would be. I spent a few hours appreciating the sights and sounds and smells, then decided to leave well before the party so I didn't have to stress about parking. I think there was only so much time I wanted to spent in the crowds anyway--I feel like I spent the perfect amount of time there.

Peter S. Beagle's birthday party was at the Cartoon Art Museum, which was fun to look through. I got there pretty far in advance, which is good because it took me a while to find a place to park. Once I located the Cartoon Art Museum, I went and sat in this beautiful park on Mission Street until the party started.

At the beginning of the party, I gave Peter my art/letter, which he appreciated very much. He told me that he was twenty-seven when he read in the newspaper that his favorite author died alone and drunk at fifty-seven, and he always regretted never writing him a letter. I only got to talk with him briefly because of course, it was a party and his attentions were split among many people, but that's fine because I've gotten to talk to him at more length multiple times.

I milled around for a while, checking out the art in the museum and snacking on cupcakes. At the auction of Last Unicorn goods, I bid on one piece of art, but didn't win it--which is probably for the best, haha, with how much money is going to PokéCen this month. Lastly, Peter read a wonderful new story he wrote about Schmendrick, which I enjoyed very much. He's going to release a volume of stories about Schmendrick, which I will happily buy and read once it's out. I stayed around for a while after that, but, while there were many people still around, not much more seemed to be happening, and I didn't want to wait in line for an autograph when I have his autograph about ten times already, haha. I was getting tired by this point anyway, and the drive home is long, so I took my leave around 8:30 PM. The drive home was uneventful, just listened to a bunch of awesome music.

I always do my best to show my appreciation to Peter every time I see him, because he's seventy-four now, and someday (hopefully not soon) when he passes away, I don't want to look back with regret and say, "I wish I had expressed to him how much I love his writing when I had the chance." He is my all-time favorite author, after all! He's also just a lovely person to talk to.

It was a very nice trip, and I'm glad I went!

Now I'm just trying to figure out what to do about work, because I said I may or may not go in today. I'm really tired, and I probably won't have too much to do tomorrow (and I could come in Tuesday as well if my boss wants me to), but...anyway, I can't decide. Maybe I'll go in in a few hours if I feel any more energetic.

Gosh, I've wanted to watch The Last Unicorn for so long. I should really get on that soon!

Have you read the book? The book is much better in my opinion, as the movie is old and a little on the cheesy side in parts, but it's worth watching as well. But, the book is incredible. * 3 *
