My friend Linda, who is a fellow wildlife rehabber, wildlife biologist, and just a great person period, called me the other day about a turkey baby she was raising. She said she didn't think he's a wild turkey, as he's extremely friendly and hardier than wild turkey babies generally are. Someone's cat brought him in and he was in terrible shape when she got him. Well, now he's recovered, and she wanted help IDing him.

She brought him over, and when I opened the box, to my surprise I found--a baby chicken!

Now, to be fair, he's a very unusual breed--likely an Asian or Middle-Eastern game bird. These birds are very prehistoric looking, tall, slow-growing, big-boned, and they do look quite a bit like turkeys. I don't think most people would realize he's a chicken. It gave us both a good laugh, though.

Now our wildlife group has gotten chickens in that were allegedly hawks, pheasants, turkeys, and quail, and those are just in the past few years.

Anyway, I adopted Turk the not-turkey, and I'm trying to get Butterscotch, the mother serama in the house, to accept him. Her chicks are about the same age as Turk, however Turk is larger than even Butterscotch herself, so she thinks he's a threat and keeps going after him. I'm hoping she'll eventually accept him if he stays in with her long enough. Poor Turk thinks he's more of a person than anything else, and when I try to introduce him to chickens, he cowers under me. So much for being fierce, despite how he's going to look when he grows up!

Next up: My thoughts on Chihayafuru!

I'll take some! I'm trying to figure out the specific breed this guy is, too. There are a few that he could be and considering he's only a month or so old, it's hard to say which one he is for sure. I might post him on some chicken forums to get some input from people more knowledgeable about these breeds.

So far the mama chicken is still after him, but I think/hope that with time she'll realize he's just a baby like hers. Just a BIG baby compared to hers and even compared to her, LOL.

That is adorable!
How wonderful and cute with his name Turk. And besides that the name reminds me of Scrubs...love that show.

I was trying to Google what he looks like but Google wasn't being very helpful hahaha.

Turk sounds like one of those people who like giants and mean but they're actually sweeties.

Yeah, I thought of Scrubs, too! I've only seen episodes of it here and there but it's a fun show. :D

Well, I didn't give a breed name! I think he's probably either a Shamo or an Asil, but there's a chance he could be something else. Google them, they're bizarre birds! I thought they were ugly for a while, but after seeing them in person a few times I decided I find them fascinating and amazing.

Yeah, he's a sweetheart! He's going to be a big, gentle rooster when he grows up. For now he's a funny-looking little thing with not many feathers and all tall and gangly. I'll take pictures soon, probably tomorrow!

He could be one of a few breeds--I'm trying to figure out which one! He doesn't have many feathers and he's fairly young, so it's hard to say for certain. He's either an Asil or Shamo most likely.

It looks as if the Shamo has a very long neck! I can see why someone might mistaken it for a Turkey. Oh, the MLP:FiM posters I have for you, do you still want them? I know you got a set from your Walmart and I have someone else who could take them. Let me know...;)

They're very tall, muscular birds! People do use them for fighting, though of course not anyone I know.

I got tons of the posters myself, but thanks for asking! Pass them on to that next person! :D

That is a shame that anyone would force animals to fight...;_;

Cool beans, [livejournal.com profile] yaoi_queen will be happy to know that I can send her two of each...:D
