Mar. 6th, 2011 01:32 pmI found my sweet black silkie Minkie dead today. ;____; She was showing symptoms of a brain problem yesterday (a common issue among silkies) so I put her in a separate pen in the duck and guinea fowl coop so no one could bully her. Except she kept escaping from the pen... I should have brought her inside, but the sad thing is no matter what chickens I would put her with, she would get bullied, and keeping chickens alone is rarely a good idea. Silkies tend to be bottom of the totem pole with my chickens and they sustain brain injuries easily because of how their skull is, and so I wanted her to stay out with the other chickens so she wouldn't be lonely, but separated so she couldn't be bullied.
I'm so sad, she was so pretty and soft and sweet. She had been having trouble fitting in since The Salula died. I don't know how old she was, and she had had a brain problem before that she recovered from. Maybe this one was just too much. I would like another few silkies someday, but perhaps not until I figure out where they could go where no one else could bother them. They just have trouble being a normal chicken.
Anyway, I'll miss her. I love you Minky, rest in peace...
Comments disabled because I'll be all right. I'm distracting myself with the awesome that is Pokémon Black, and this is just an unfortunate but real part of keeping as many poultry as I do.
