So I'm leaving for Tahoe tonight, and I'm nervous leaving my flock! ;; The poultry politics at the moment are quite complicated because I introduced the chicks I hatched to the coop. They're doing fine, but the problem is I have to figure out what to do with the guinea fowl because the guinea fowl relentlessly beat up newcomers to the coop, to the point where they could kill someone. They do fine with the birds they know, but any strange birds will be bullied. I think it would be best to let the guinea fowl free range while we're gone, but mom is scared that they'll go cause chaos in the neighbors' yards. Which is a valid concern.
The other option is to put them in a pen I have inside the coop, which is probably what I'm going to do. The guinea fowl aren't going to like it one bit, though, and will likely throw a total fit. If the guinea fowl carry on for too long, the neighbors will complain because guinea fowl are ridiculously loud and obnoxious.
On top of this, the chicks don't know where it's safe to sleep yet, so chances are they'll go sleep in the corner of the run. This means if a raccoon came by, it could reach through and pull a chick's head through and eat it. D: We haven't had any predator problems at all, but it just worries me because we won't be around and the dogs won't be around. I'm going to barricade the outside of the coop as best as I can, but I can't help but worry a bit anyway, though chances are it'll be just fine.
All this just to leave until Friday, hnrgh, and seeing as we're leaving tonight that's not very long. Hopefully by the time our family reunion rolls around in mid-July, the poultry political situation will be resolved and this won't be a concern. =___= I wish the guinea fowl could just be nice, but no, they have to make my life difficult! Really, in all honesty the best thing would probably be for me to rehome the guinea fowl, but I like them too much and they serve as the alarm for if anything is wrong with the coop. So that's not going to happen.
Time to go finish my packages and get to the post office, and then the intake center! I feel bad, I totally spaced and forgot to let anyone know at the intake center that I was going to be gone Wednesday, until I e-mailed Janey last night. ;; I hope someone will be able to cover my shift, or that Linda or the other Wednesday volunteer will be able to handle it without me. Sigh.
Just for the record, I'm not that terribly stressed or anything, just trying to figure things out. This trip's timing is kinda inconvenient, but it will be nice, so I don't want to skip out on it.
