Jun. 9th, 2010 12:44 pmI took in the baby Coturnix (quail) on a whim, but I did some research on them last night and it turns out they make good pets and are quite easy to care for, so I'm happy I took them in. :) Linda is going to give me her two adult females, which will be good because the ideal small flock is one male to four to five females. I just have to hope I don't get a bunch of males--apparently they're like roosters and don't get along with one another, so extra males will have to be kept separate or rehomed. All they require is about 1 square foot per bird, which is virtually nothing, so housing them won't be problem, and they eat the same thing that I feed my chickens, and reach maturity within 6-7 weeks. They're cute little buggers, too.
Now I just need to get some more chukar to keep my chukar company and I'll be set, bird-wise. I'm trying to decide whether to keep trying to get chukar semi-locally, or perhaps I should just order and set some eggs. The chukar doesn't seem to mind hanging out with the chickens, but I don't believe in keeping lone animals of a species. They deserve to spend time with their own kind.
Honey thinks she's the mother of the serama chicks and baby quail, hahaha. She spends lots of time sitting next to their brooder and staring at them, but not in a predatory way. Like a guardian. She's like The Salula, I guess--they both have super-motherly personalities and want to mother anything and everything.
The serama chicks are doing very well, and I'm so excited to see what colors they turn out. :D
I need to go drop off my resume at vet clinics in my area in hopes of getting a job as an assistant, but for some reason I'm nervous to go and drop them off. I don't know why, it's not that difficult or big of a deal, but for some reason it's hard for me to do. :( I really need money for AX/collecting/life in general so getting a job is something I need to do, but the process of getting a job intimidates me and I don't know why.
Anyway, better be off. Got to go mail stuff and maybe drop off resumes before going to the intake center.
