Jan. 16th, 2010 12:48 amMost of this entry is about birds. Just be warned.
* Splash hatched another chick yesterday! This one is slightly smaller than the first and it's black with a brown face and brown wings. Cuuute! \o/ Waiting for the other three (actually four, but one's due a bit later...) to hatch, then I will take a bunch of pictures!
* Got in a Northern Pintail (duck) this evening. He's a gorgeous mature male with breeding plumage, and he was shot in the wing over a week ago. The area where the bullet went through is swollen and may have hit a and broken a bone. If that's the case, the prognosis is not good after a week of being able to heal incorrectly. :( I'm currently trying to figure out what I'm doing with him and where he's going, as my wildlife group does not have a facility for dabbling ducks like Pintails. I'm going to call WildCare in Sacramento in the morning in hopes of finding a place for him to go. For now he's just in a tub in my room in the dark so he can de-stress. He's very afraid of me. I wish I could do more
* Had another showdown with Suzi the cockatoo. I'm telling you, I'm pretty certain now I don't ever want a cockatoo, and perhaps not even a large parrot period. Don't get me wrong, I like her and don't hold it against her, but she's...surprisingly scary, actually! She's escaped her cage twice now while I was cleaning her food and water bowls, and charged me and Honey, trying her hardest to bite us. She keeps biting my shoe, which is pretty flimsy and not a good defense against such a beak, and she made contact, albeit briefly and lightly for a cockatoo, twice. Even a very light bite through the shoe left a bruise! Both times it took me a half-hour or more to finally get her to go back in her cage, and she spent that whole time chasing me and biting. :'< It got to the point where I was actually having to shake her off of my shoe.
Now I can say I fully understand why people say cockatoos are like toddlers. Only toddlers with large beaks.
I think I'm going to stick with poultry, non-hookbills, and small hookbills for now as far as my own birds go.
* Feeling kind of crummy for some reason. Sad, I guess, but for no apparent reason. Maybe I just need to sleep or something, I dunno. Not much to be sad about other than the duck, but I'll work that out tomorrow and it's not particularly a reason to be gloomy.
* Going to go volunteer from 12-3 tomorrow at AnimalSave. Get to hang out with puppies for three hours! \o/ Puppies! After that I might have to drive the duck down to Yuba City or Sacramento depending on where he needs to go/if I can find someone else to transport him.
* Going to go read LJ, save things on Pixiv, and other braindead activities for now. Feeling very much braindead. ._____.
